CERTCOST – Ökonomische Analyse von Bio-Kontrollsystemen auf EU Ebene Organic Eprints
Dabbert, Stephan; Lippert, Christian; Schulz, Tatjana; Zorn, Alexander.
The EU funded project CERTCOST proposes to combine the experience and knowledge of both researchers and SMEs to analyse the implementation of organic certification systems and to estimate all relevant expenditures or transaction costs for different certification systems along the organic food supply chain. Benefits of certification will also be analysed, using data on consumers’ recognition and willingness to pay for different organic logos and trademarks. Finally, recommendations will be drawn for the EU Commission, national competent authorities and private actors in organic food and farming on how to increase effectiveness and efficiency of organic certification.

Guidelines for Sustainability Assessment in Food and Agriculture Organic Eprints
El Hage, Nadia.
The ecological, economic and social principles of sustainable development (WCED, 1987) received nearly universal agreement during and following the 1992 Earth Summit. One of the summit‘s major outcomes, Agenda 21, includes a whole chapter (Chapter 14) on sustainable agriculture and rural development. Much progress has been made in the past two decades. For most social and economic Millennium Development Goals, improvements have been substantial (UN, 2011). Global per capita Gross National Income has more than doubled between 1992 and 2010 (from 5,035 current interna-tional USD at PPP to 11,058; World Bank, 2011). Yet, reaching the poorest, all over the world, re-mains a challenge (UN, 2011) and it is today generally recognised that GDP growth alone is not...

Healthy growth in mid-scale values based food chains Organic Eprints
Kvam, Gunn-Turid.
This paper is a literature review of studies of mid-scale food values based food chains and healthy growth processes in the organic food sector. By midscale values based food chains we mean productions that are growing out of the niche/small scale market into larger volumes and sales. Previous research have shown that niche market chains might have inherent problems in moving from niche to volume, while mainstream large-scale markets have inherent problems in securing and advancing organic values. A main hypothesis is that mid-scale value based chains are able to deal with these challenges because they are based on a different form of marketing logic and strategies than either small- or large scale chains. As a first step in analysis of the success of...

How is the communication of values, qualities, and motivations supported along the value chain from producer to consumer and vice versa? Organic Eprints
Furtschegger, Christoph; Schermer, Markus; Borec, Andreja; Prišenk, Jernej.
First, we consider it helpful to give a short introduction into the topic of communication and share some reflections why this aspect is important to look at in the frame of the HealthyGrowth project. The general question is why communication is necessary and what the purpose of communication is. One aspect commonly mentioned concerns information as a means of marketing. As Karstberg (2015) notes: “Research shows that a significant barrier to consumers purchasing more organic foods is lack of information. This leads the relevant body of research to call for better communication around organic foods.” Zanoli and Naspetti (2002:652) expressed the need “to devise a better communication strategy” with a view to “informing consumers about the extra quality...

Organic and Fair Palm Oil Production – Assessment Project Organic Eprints
Bernet, Thomas; van den Berge, Paul.
Over the last 15 years, global palm oil production has more than doubled. Indonesia and Malaysia alone produce more than 80 % of all palm oil today. Being the cheapest vegetable oil available on the world market - thanks to high hectare yields of oil palms - both demand and supply for palm oil continue to grow. Particularly, the further expansion of monocultures set in place by big companies is critical, as there is strong evidence that palm oil production goes hand in hand with deforestation, biodiversity losses, land tenure conflicts, and negative social impacts. In this regard, also the different palm oil specific certification schemes, including RSPO, have being criticized for not effectively encountering the (mentioned) negative environmental and...

Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment Routine: Results from pilot applications of the FAO SAFA Guidelines Organic Eprints
Jawtusch, Julia; Schader, Christian; Stolze, Matthias; Baumgart, Lukas; Niggli, Urs.
There is currently no common understanding of how to measure sustainability in the food sector. To close this gap, the FAO has developed Guidelines for Sustainability Assessments of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA), which were published as a test version in June 2012. The Guidelines describe about 60 sustainability objectives, which are classified into 20 themes and four dimensions: Good governance, Environmental integrity, Economic resilience, Social well-being, as well as assessment procedures. This paper presents an approach for the sustainability assessments of enterprises in the food and agriculture sector in full compliance with the SAFA Guidelines. We developed an indicator-based tool (“SMART”), which is applicable at all food supply chain...
